DinoMania!!

About a year ago, Owen bought tickets on a groupon to a thing called Walking with the Dinosaurs. I'm impressed, given how long ago they were purchased in advanced, that we remembered them when it came time to go!

Nonetheless, we did remember and we did go. :-)

I am going to take this opportunity to be caught on the record sounding like an old person when I say this, but, Back in my day, .... We never had special effects as cool as this!! The show was truly amazing!

Since Owen had class, the kids and I got there first and played around for a minute.

Then he arrived and the show began

The dinosaurs fought with one another and battled throughout each era. The paleontologist was the narrator that brought us through each era with him.

It truly was awesome. We even made ourselves busy during the intermission. :-)

So glad we went. I admit I learned a bunch of things I never knew before haha

We all loved it!!! I was so happy we went :-)

The Big 7!!

Owen decided, right over Christmas, to show Mitchell the work of Pokemon. Needless to say, he very quickly became addicted. So when the question came of which theme to do for his birthday, Pokemon was top of the list!!

Typically I am weeks ahead of the game. I usually have the gifts done, banner made and themed items in the mail ready for the party. This year, however, I slightly dropped the ball. A week before his birthday, I'm running around looking for Pokemon themed party items. Big. Fat. Fail. According to the lady at Zurchers and U.S. Novelty and Party, Pokemon is one of those themes that goes in and out. Right now apparently, is the 'out' season. Because I'm just that lucky. Hahaha. Online had plenty of items, but I was out of time for that option.
So, like any other self respecting mom of this era, I turn to my imagination, Pinterest and Google to save my life. Work as been so stressful and packed lately, I didn't have a lot of prep time either. So this was literally fly by the seat of my pants kind of dealio. However, I think this made me more proud of the job I did :-)

The only crummy thing about this year was the custody schedule. This year, Mitchell's birthday was on a Friday that landed on our weekend. That has like, Never happened. We were super excited. The one thing I did do in advance was plan what kind of party we were doing, meaning this year we wanted to do a swim party for him. Jessica always gets the summer stuff like swimming and since Mitchell's is in the winter, he never really does. So we decided to do something a little summery for him. Unfortunately, because Martin Luther King, jr. Day was Owen's ex-wife's this year, that meant she got the entire surrounding weekend as well. :-( this sucked. So Our plans had to change a bit. We still got him for that day, just later than I had hoped and we had to take them back after. I felt bad giving him presents then saying he had to wait to play with them for 1/2 a week :-( part of the business of a blended fam.

But we still pulled it off nonetheless!! And he seemed to have a great time :-)

As I said before, there weren't very many options in the Pokemon party supplies so I had to hand make a bunch.  I made a happy birthday banner of balloons and a pokeball in the middle

I found a great stencil to make the cupcakes wrapped in Pikachu paper!!

I bought yellow cups and drew Pikachu on the face of them to make it better than just plain old yellow :-)

The drinks were Gatorade but as far as this party was concerned, they were Health and Manna ;-)

Then We had snacks and candy. Jessica made a goal of not having candy this year, so she was a little ticked about the candy part. Sorry love! We'll keep it candy free on Your next birthday :-)

Lastly, we played pin the tail on the Pikachu hahaha. The rules of the game were pretty lost on the kids....but they all seemed to have fun anyway.

I feel bad I didn't get any pictures of them actually swimming. I admit the idea of my phone near a pool with the kids just didn't seem like a great idea at the time. But they had a blast! They played around the lazy river, I can't believe Mitchell can touch the floor this year!!! Last year he still couldn't. My cute little weed! Haha he's getting so big! Cousins came and played and ate and laughed. All in all, I call it a success :-)

I love my fam!! And I love this crazy boy!!

So proud to be your Mama Mitch!! You're sunshine in my heart every day I get to feel your warm hugs and hear your happy giggles. I love you and Happy Birthday!! #7!

Habits of Mass Destruction

So can I just say, I hate healthy living. Don't get me wrong, I like to feel healthy and happy like anyone else, but the effort that goes into it for some of us is ridiculously difficult and tiring.
I met a girl once that told me some people can just never be thin. They are born fat and will always be fat. I'm unsure what her credentials were but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and call her an idiot. What I have found in my travels and long aged wisdom (jokes) is that in the end it all comes down to math. If you understand the fundamentals of your body and the function of the metabolism as well as your immune system then you should be able to come up with the correct equation for finding the correct habitual program to keep you a healthy weight and living style.
HOWEVER, this is not what this blog today is about. While yes, I have proven the mathematical equation to be correct ( I lost 35lbs in 2012 counting my calories and working out steadily) I have to admit that it's not the math that suffers for me in keeping me from being healthy. It's the freakin habits.
Yes, I lost 35 pounds. Yes, I kept it off for a year. No, I have not kept up on that and I have gained back a that and then some this year (2014). WHY? .... well I'm glad you asked.... the honest answer? Hormones. Seriously. Seems unfair really. I had my IUD removed in January. I have had one in since I was 20. then I put one back in in May. Then took it out again in August. My health and weight have fluctuated drastically due to this instability. The definition of why all the IUD changes and personal health issues gets a little too personal for me to want to discuss on this blog, however I will say, it was necessary at the time. Despite the horrible repercussions it has had on my body. Perhaps those situations will be an occasion on another day for a new blog post :P

I cannot always blame my weight gain through the years on my hormonal levels, however. So then why does my body fluctuate larger numbers each month/year on the scale? I have no idea. Because it sucks? Because it's hard and because every day doesn't equal a strong willed always motivated day for me? I know I am not alone in this predicament. I know many understand what I'm talking about. But for once, this misery does not want company. I see others that have honed in the talent and gift for creating healthy living styles as a constant for themselves. Others we blame it on genetics and say they are just "naturally skinny". Which is a real thing. My step-daughter Jessica has this gene. But for me, someone considered "average" by all accounts physically, it takes some serious effort. All day every day. The only way I will ever be a size I am proud of and remain healthy is to work out, count my calories and watch the times I eat and my portion control.
Because I have done this once, I keep thinking I can do this again. That it will just take some serious discipline and that "Today is the Day!!"......(she says while eating a peanut m&m....).

This year, I have the cliche privilege of resolving to start over again on my lifestyle change. I refuse to call it a diet because, as I have said before, this is not temporary. This is a habit changer. Something I must change about my daily life. Forever.

Another aspect that complicates this effort is the other members of my home that I am responsible to buy groceries for. My husband's desires in the meal department are vastly different than mine. Owen wants to get down a few pounds too, but his motivation is very different. My children don't like any kind of exotic or strange food. They like food they can pronounce and see exactly what was used in making it. (spaghetti, chicken and rice, etc). This creates a huge problem when they request sloppy volcanoes for dinner ( sloppy joe meat poured over mashed potatoes in stead of on a bun) or any kind of pasta dish. I know what to do.... the knowledge isn't the problem. Portion control and counting the calories is how to negotiate that issue. But it's when I'm still hungry afterward and since those are some of my favorite dishes...I want more soooo badly.
It's the habit I have adopted of eating a bowl of cereal during a movie late at night or having some skittles during work at my desk. For some people, this isn't a big deal. For me, it's the difference of an array of pant sizes all up in my closet currently :(

Why do I write this today? Well it's New Years and the resolutions are jumping around the world like crazy. But this isn't really a resolution for this year. This is more like a 20 year resolution. Maybe 20 years from now, when I've been healthy for that long, I'll decide to take on something else like mountain biking or something. But until then, I think I will take one step in the right direction. Low calorie, healthier breakfast and lunch at work. Improving those meals, whilst vowing to not eat the snacks my co-workers bring in, will help me to at least start somewhere right?

Join with me, millions of overweight women and men alike. We are not alone. let's make this year better than last, and start a trend of good years to come. Years where swimming isn't coupled with shame and guilt. Where running a few feet because you're in a hurry to grab the elevator isn't accompanied by parts of your body jiggling that shouldn't. Where hoodies are worn for the comfort and logo, not to try and hide the shape of your midsection, and where pictures can be body shots, not just from the bust line up. Please people,... let's do it for the children ;)

The Holiday Season

So it's happened. All the planning, the schedules, the money, the time and the giving and the eating. It's done. For a moment that is haha. For a brief moment I get a breather. In this time, I am going to update my blog :-)

Let's start with Santa! This year we decided to go to The Station to see Santa Clause. We live in a small town north of Salt Lake City. For years, we would stand in line to see the Santa Clause at the Festival of Trees. Fake beard, bad breath and two hours of a line for who knows what reason because by the time it is your turn they rush you out like You're the one wasting Their time...nope! Not this year. We decided to embrace our small town life and find a local Santa.
We live in Centerville now. About 5 minutes north is The Station Park shopping area in Farmington. I love this area for shopping, movies and dining. It's even Owen approved :-) they have heaters and fireplaces with lots of outdoor seating for anyone who doesn't want to be dragged through the shops. Owens dream form of "shopping with me" haha.
So apparently at Christmas, they put a cottage in the middle of the square next to an ice skating rink. We showed up thinking there would be a long line. Not the case. We got in right away. Santa had Mrs. Santa there with him as well. They also had a mail box to send letters to Santa. It was awesome.
The next day, we came back and went ice skating. Both Mitchell and Jessica were so daring! They really picked up some great speed :-)

We did keep up the tradition of The Festival of Trees. It was much more fun for me this year because we didn't have to wait in line for Santa. It's always hard to see the stories of adorable children that passed on to the next world, and even if adults for that matter. But the trees were beautiful. The kids both bought souvenirs to donate money to primary children's.

And of course, we went and saw the lights on Temple Square. The nativity is always so fun to watch. To see the light in the kids' eyes when they are watching the story and the feeling of everyone around watching the baby. We also got to go up and see the statue of Jesus. The kids loved it. Afterward, we got hot cocoa and desserts at Kneaders.

This year I was asked to be on the committee to decorate the tables for the ward Christmas party. I was so nervous. But I think it ended up nicely. Many people complimented on them. Still, I was very relieved to have it over with. They did a nativity program that honestly was the first thing that helped me feel the true Christmas spirit. It was nice to spend time with those in our neighborhood and community. I think I'm finally starting to feel like we belong here.

Christmas parties were pretty usual this year. Super fun and nice to spend time with family. The walker party was first. Gotta love Barta :) She may be older, but she's still a spit-fire!

Then the Esau Family party

Then the Anderson party which we hosted at our house this year. I think that was my favorite. We were very fortunate to have the kids for Christmas this year. I love when we can see the Christmas magic in their eyes. The hope and love in a story they tell or a gift they give.

Jessica and Mitchell each made their own batch of rice krispie treats for everyone

The kids read their letters to Santa on Grandpa's lap

Then they released the balloons for them to fly to the North Pole!

We all participated in the Christmas Talent show. Mindee sang an unknown beautiful Christmas tune

Bennett and Hailey stole the show with their family musical numbers including All I want for Christmas and Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer!

Jessica got to show off her amazing new skills and talent of playing the PIANO! She played Jolly Old St. Nicholas :)

Then we heard the Christmas Story through the Bible and the Book of Mormon

Then we opened presents, hung out and chatted for a while with everyone until it was time to go to bed and wait to catch Santa up leaving our presents.

Of all the things we did this season, my favorite was our sub for Santa. There was a family in need. The Esaus all divvied out the members of the family. We chose the 11 year old girl in 5th grade. Which was super fun for Jessica. We went shopping for her together. The kids had fun choosing gifts for her.
We delivered the presents the day before Christmas Eve. Words can not express the love and pure emotions we felt during this experience. I think this should be a new tradition.

All in all, Christmas was a success. We had fun, ate food, laughed together, shared together and made some great memories. I love my family.
